Whiteside School has introduced a systems approach called Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS). Its goal is to prevent and respond to classroom and school discipline problems. This program will help create a school environment that teaches children to make good choices and take responsibility for their learning and their behavior. PBIS develops school-wide systems that support staff to teach and promote positive, appropriate behavior in all students. By reducing behavioral problems, PBIS creates and maintains safe learning environments where teachers can teach and students can learn.
In general, the idea is to have a school-wide incentive program that rewards appropriate behavior. For those students who have difficulty following the rules, we will endeavor to assist them in making necessary adjustments. This may include consequences such as loss of some free time and privileges.
PBIS consists of a set of “standards and expectations” that will be addressed through lessons taught to all children in our school. They are built around the 4 “B” words that form the core of the expectations.
Fourth Grade Implementation Plan:
Teach standards and expectations.
Explain the “4B’s” through modeling, role-play, and daily practice. This will take place throughout the year.
Violations- Webster’s Dictionary defines a violation as a failure to uphold the requirements of an obligation.
Students whose behavior does not meet the standards will earn a violation. Consequences for violations will not be enforced until after a period of practice, thus giving teachers the opportunity to teach and model the standards and expectations. Violations may also be given by “Specials” teachers, supervisors, etc. and will be recorded in the child’s agenda by the homeroom teacher. Violations will accumulate for each quarter. Then they will be wiped clean at the end of the quarter and a new cycle will begin.
Missing Assignments
Any homework or assignment that is not completed on time is considered a violation. An unsigned agenda also earns a violation.
OOPS! Coupons
Students will be given an OOPS! Coupon at the beginning of each quarter. This coupon may be given to the teacher to avoid receiving a violation. Students are responsible for their coupon, and no replacements will be given. Coupons may not be used to avoid consequences for misbehavior.
Consequences- All violations received will be recorded in the agenda.
Violation 1 & 2 Warning
Violation 3 Consequence- Loss of Fun Friday Recess
Violation 4 & 5 Warning
Violation 6 Consequences- Lunch detention and loss of Fun Friday Recess
Violation 7 & 8 Warning
Violation 9 Loss of Fun Friday & Good News Party
If a student does not seem to be responding to PBIS and has received 10 violations in a quarter other interventions will be assigned by the teacher. Interventions may include a visit to the principal, a half or full day in ALC (Alternative Learning Center), loss of field trips, or an alternative behavior plan or placement.
Rewards
Good News Parties- The teachers plan the events each quarter. Students must have less than 9 violations to attend. The Good News Party is a privilege for those students who have met the expectations during the quarter. Students with 9 or more violations will remain in a classroom.
Star Student Awards- Students may be recognized by teachers, supervisors, etc. with a Star Student Award! Students sign the Star Student Book and pick a prize! This will qualify them for the drawing that takes place during the next Character Education assembly.
Fun Friday Recess- Students may earn extra recess time from 2:30-2:55 on Friday afternoon. Students are eligible if they have not received their 3rd, 6th , or 9th violation during that week.
Other rewards may be implemented by each classroom teacher.
AUTOMATIC EXCLUSIONS from the Good News Party
A lunch detention for behavior, bus problem, playground fight, suspension from school, or time spent in ALC automatically excludes a student from participation in the next Good News Party. The teachers reserve the right to make adjustments to the plan as necessary to insure success in meeting the goals of the PBIS program.
Close cooperation between school and home benefits students in a positive way. Whiteside’s Character Education program and PBIS helps encourage our students to exhibit common courtesy, manners, respect for others, self-discipline, responsibility, and accountability.
